USE AND CONTACT CONDITION
A cutting or serving board and a countertop organizer may need different materials and finishes. Tell us how the product will be used, cleaned and exposed to moisture so the specification reflects its contact condition.
A. DIRECT FOOD-CONTACT APPLICATIONS
If your product will contact food directly, tell us the intended use and destination market. Also identify the compliance standard or test route for your program so we can discuss material, adhesive and finish options against it.
B. INDIRECT OR NON-FOOD-CONTACT APPLICATIONS
For these products, specify fit, access, moisture exposure, structure, surface appearance and packing. Classify the actual contact condition, including non-food-contact use where applicable.
Confirm for your program: Food-contact requirements can differ by product, material, adhesive, coating and intended use. Confirm the applicable standard or test route before quotation or sampling. These requirements apply only where specified for the product and program.
CONSTRUCTION AND QUOTATION
Outer length and width identify only part of the specification. A reference photo may not show the details that affect material use, machining, assembly and packing.
MATERIAL, SURFACE AND CLEANING
The appropriate use of solid wood, bamboo, plywood, MDF and veneer depends on intended use, contact condition, moisture exposure, structure, thickness, appearance and destination-market conditions.
For direct food-contact products, confirm the destination market and applicable compliance or test route before selecting material, adhesive and finish. Do not treat plywood, MDF and veneer as universal choices for those applications.
Species, grain direction, thickness, construction, storage and use conditions can affect wood movement, warping, cupping, twist and flatness.
Specify the target surface as unfinished, sanded, oil-finished, lacquered, painted, stained or another agreed finish. Also tell us how the product will be cleaned and whether it will contact food or moisture.
QUALITY AND ACCEPTANCE POINTS
Define the acceptance points that apply to your product and tie them to the purchase specification. The checks will vary with the product structure and ordered components.
Specify overall and working dimensions, board or panel thickness, and the position of holes, slots or handles where these features apply.
Define acceptable flatness or visible warping where relevant. For products with lids, drawers, dividers or fitted components, state the required movement and fit.
Set acceptance points for sanding, edge profile, visible surface condition, finish consistency, glue marks and obvious surface defects where relevant.
Confirm the required hardware, feet, anti-slip parts, dividers, labels, retail packing, surface separation and carton protection for each SKU.
Numeric tolerances or test requirements should follow the approved drawing, purchase specification or agreed sample where applicable.
PRIVATE LABEL, SKU AND RETAIL PACKING
Keep a separate specification record for each SKU, including its dimensions, material, finish, components and packing. Match the logo, barcode and care information to the correct item.
Send the approved logo artwork and specify its position. Assign each barcode, care instruction and retail label to the correct SKU.
Record the size, thickness, handle or slot layout, finish and components for each item in a range of similar-looking products.
Choose surface separation, inserts, sleeves and cartons for each SKU's finish, edges, handles, lids, drawers and loose components. For mixed-SKU cartons, define the packing method and carton marks for each item.
